How to Safely Give Yourself an Injection
(For patients prescribed self-injectable medications by Sageview Medical)
Before You Begin
Wash your hands thoroughly with soap and warm water.
Gather your supplies:
Your medication pen or syringe
Alcohol swabs
Cotton ball or gauze
Sharps disposal container
⚠️ Important: Only use injections if you have been trained and approved by your Sageview Medical provider.
Choosing an Injection Site
The most common areas are:
Abdomen: At least 2 inches away from your belly button.
Thighs: Front of the upper thigh.
Upper arm: Outer back portion (may need assistance).
✨ Rotate sites to avoid irritation.
Step-by-Step Process
Clean the Area
Wipe the chosen injection site with an alcohol swab. Let it dry completely.Prepare Your Medication
If using a pen device: attach a new needle, prime if required.
If using a syringe/vial: clean vial top, draw up prescribed dose.
Pinch the Skin
Gently pinch 1–2 inches of skin at the injection site.Insert the Needle
Insert at a 90-degree angle (or 45° if instructed).Inject Slowly
Push the plunger or press the pen button until the medication is delivered.Remove Needle & Dispose
Withdraw needle, apply light pressure with gauze or cotton.
Place used needle directly in a sharps container.
Aftercare
Slight redness or soreness is normal.
Do not rub the injection site.
Report any swelling, rash, or severe pain to your provider.
