How to Safely Give Yourself an Injection

(For patients prescribed self-injectable medications by Sageview Medical)

Before You Begin

  • Wash your hands thoroughly with soap and warm water.

  • Gather your supplies:

    • Your medication pen or syringe

    • Alcohol swabs

    • Cotton ball or gauze

    • Sharps disposal container

⚠️ Important: Only use injections if you have been trained and approved by your Sageview Medical provider.

Choosing an Injection Site

The most common areas are:

  • Abdomen: At least 2 inches away from your belly button.

  • Thighs: Front of the upper thigh.

  • Upper arm: Outer back portion (may need assistance).

✨ Rotate sites to avoid irritation.

Step-by-Step Process

  1. Clean the Area
Wipe the chosen injection site with an alcohol swab. Let it dry completely.

  2. Prepare Your Medication

    • If using a pen device: attach a new needle, prime if required.

    • If using a syringe/vial: clean vial top, draw up prescribed dose.

  3. Pinch the Skin
Gently pinch 1–2 inches of skin at the injection site.

  4. Insert the Needle
Insert at a 90-degree angle (or 45° if instructed).

  5. Inject Slowly
Push the plunger or press the pen button until the medication is delivered.

  6. Remove Needle & Dispose
Withdraw needle, apply light pressure with gauze or cotton.
Place used needle directly in a sharps container.

Aftercare

  • Slight redness or soreness is normal.

  • Do not rub the injection site.

  • Report any swelling, rash, or severe pain to your provider.
